So everyone is talking about SEO. You’ve probably had phone calls from sales people trying to sell you SEO. You think you know what it is but sometimes you find yourself saying, What is SEO and should I do this for my business? The short answer is yes but I’ll get to that later.
Explain SEO to Me Please!
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s the organic rankings you see in Google.
The listings on the top and sides are Google adwords listings or PPC (pay per click). Those adwords listings are ads that you pay Google and every time someone clicks on your ad you shell over money.
SEO on the other hand helps your listing rank in the organic section. The site that Google sees more as an authority and provides the user with the best content will get ranked higher than the others. It’s as simple as that (but it’s really not that simple).
What Helps My Site Rank?
If you’re wondering this great question. There are a bunch of factors that you’ll need in order to get your website to rank (SEO Basics). I’ll list some of the main ones below:
A quality website
Your site needs to be optimized and must have clean code. Google does not like flash and really wants to see that your site is responsive (mobile friendly). It pays to have a professional look over your site and optimize it. Some of the things that you want to optimize are:
– Meta title and description tags
– Alt tags
– Header tags
– Site speed
– Low page count
– Call to actions
I can go on and on but make sure the company you’re working with are looking at these.
You need to have a blog and must produce content that talks about your market. If you sell shoes talk about fashion, if you’re a personal trainer talk about fitness.
Yep I said it. If you are familar with SEO and what Google recommends they say you don’t need backlinks but you do. Backlinks make up the internet. If you host a charity event or do something in the community make sure you are getting a backlink (a link from their website to yours)! It can be as simple as your company name.
Do I really need SEO?
Let’s think about this.
How many people do you see using their phones or computers in public?
When you need a plumber or want to eat something what do you do?
You search online like 99% of the population. You look at reviews, you look at a businesses site, you check out their services or contant information. We use the internet for everything and if you’re not showing up in Google you are missing out!
I’ve helped mom and pop shops go for no rankings to page one and it has literally built their business. Guess what I do for my own business? SEO. My market is very competitive so it’s tough to rank a business like mine but I put the time and money into it becuase it helps bring me clients.
Whether you go with a company like mine or you go with another agency start today. If you could go back to yesterday start then!
When done correctly it can literally turn your business around and bring in sales.
