In my last post I showed you how to compile a list of keywords. One of the first few things I do when working with a client is compile a list of keywords and then enter them into Serp Rank Checker (a keyword ranking tool) to see where they stand in Google. This tool will go out and look at Google, Yahoo and Bing and see what spot you are ranking in for that particular term. If you’re ranking in the 11th spot for “Austin dentist” it will simply report that you are in spot 11 (not groundbreaking stuff but very useful). It checks multiple times a day and will update you on how many spots you increased or decreased for that ranking.
WARNING: Tracking your keywords and seeing how you rank compared to your competition is great to do but I don’t want you to get obsessed about it or I’ll have to erase all this wonderful free content on my blog. 🙂
Why Shouldn’t I Obsess About My Rankings
Because it will drive you nuts! What you should obsess about is your website traffic and increasing sales/leads. If you’re a business owner stop Googleing yourself and look at how your traffic is increasing or decreasing. In my next post I’ll go over how to set up and read Google Analytics (a free website traffic tool from Google) so you can look at traffic.
Why Do I Prefer This Tool?
Now with all that said, I still like to see where I’m ranking for certain terms. The truth is if you rank for terms that are being searched for, you will get more visitors to your website. I like Serp Ranker because it’s super affordable (around $10 bucks a month) and simple to use. I’ve used a few of the more expensive tools out there and quite honestly they sucked. Also Serp Rank Checker is completely online so I can check my rankings on the fly!
I’m a newbie, is this good for me?
I like things simple. Even if you just learned how to do keyword research for your business (learn here) you’ll be able to set this up in no time. It’s tough to explain through an article so I suggest you watch the video below on how to set it up. I will get you rolling in under 5 minutes, it’s that easy!
How To Use Serp Rank Checker
Follow the video for complete instructions but I’ll give you a quick rundown below the video.
1. You want to sign up here www.serpbook.com (this if an affiliate link so I get a small comission when you sign up, you can also Google Serp Rank Checker to not buy it through my link).
2. After you sign up, log in and go to Create Category.
3. Name the category (example: My Site or My Company Name).
4. Add your domain name, yoursite.com.
5. Copy and paste your keywords into the box.
6. Click Add Keywords.
It will crawl in about 5-10 minutes and you’ll be able to see where you rank.

So you now be fully equipped with what you need to track your keywords. Again I use Serp Rank Checker for my own site and my clients sites. I pay a little more than $5/mo but you don’t have to. Tracking 25 keywords for your site (their maximum for the $5/mo plan) is more than enough. I started at the $5 plan and was happy with it. I increased it as I brought on new clients.
If your head is spinning comment below and I’ll help you out!
